Use Of Testosterone Supplements And Products

How Common Are The Use Of Testosterone Products For These Cases? What Are Some Examples Products?

In 2013, there were 10 or 12 companies and it was about a $2.3 billion annual industry. It continued to climb but it has somewhat tapered off but it’s still rising where they are estimating about $3.8 billion in sales by 2018. It’s a big business.

Some of the bigger products are Androgel, Testim, Axiron and Depo-Testosterone. Those are probably the four biggest and they vary from topical gels, trans-dermal patches, which are sometimes applied to the gums or the inner cheeks and then there are the injections as well.

Is There A Certain Age Group For The Use Or Is It More Common?

You could say 50 and older, which is about the time when most people start noticing the affects of our bodies just not producing as much testosterone as it did when we were 18.

Do The Packages Carry An FDA Warning?

There was a forced warning change in March of 2015. Also, looking back historically, there’s been several different iterations of the warnings. In 2009, the FDA required the makers of Androgel and Testim to include a boxed warning regarding secondary exposure. So for example, if a child were to get a hold of the product and get it on his hands or even touch the skin of the user who recently put it on, they were finding that you could get exposed by contact. That was the first thing.

Then in January of 2014, the FDA sort of pumped the brakes on these products and said, “Hold on, we’re seeing some post-market surveillance warnings that suggest an uptake in stroke, heart attack and potentially death”. In June of 2014, they did the same thing with deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary emboli or blood clots and announced that they were going to essentially engage in a full-scale investigation including an advisory committee meeting, the results of which came out in March 2015.

The FDA concluded that there is an increased cardiovascular risk and that in some studies, there was a reported increased risk of heart attack, stroke and death. Based on those findings it now required the labeling to be updated to include those risk factors.
